Dr Sara McCartney

Dr Sara McCartney is Consultant Gastroenterologist at University College London Hospital where she is Divisional Clinical Director for Gastroenterology. She has a subspeciality interest in IBD and studied inflammatory mechanisms in IBD pathogenesis for her PhD thesis. She established and chaired the Adolescent and Young Person’s Section at the BSG , was a member of the IBD Section Committee and represents the BSG at the Royal College of Physicians Young Adults steering Group. Dr McCartney is an accredited bowel cancer screening colonoscopist in the National Screening Programme and is an examiner in colonoscopy accreditation. Her research interests are mainly in IBD and optimising management for young people with complex disease. She heads a large adolescent and young adult multidisciplinary IBD clinic at UCLH promoting optimal care for young patients. She is a key member of the team producing guidelines for transition in GI disease, is chief investigator in the TRANSIT study and lectures widely on the management of adolescent IBD
